The Adoption Option

You see a lot of celebrities these days adopting children from all over the world, and so it almost seems like something that’s quite in style.  The fact of the matter is that adopting a child is never out of style, and always must be approached with thorough self-examination, both financially and emotionally.

There are so many ways to adopt a child in this modern world, and it’s one of the most courageous, challenging and rewarding steps you can take in your life, and the life of another human being in need.

Since there are a lot of different kinds of adoptions, there are a lot of different avenues through which you can adopt a child.  An agency adoption is just one of them, and includes a certified team that will match you with a child after thorough background checks.  These agencies can be either private or public, but always in conjunction with the state.

An independent adoption, on the other hand, involves no agency.  These require a direct arrangement between foster family and birth parents, or with use of a mediator like an attorney, doctor, or clergyman.  There is a lot of court paperwork involved in independent adoptions, so hiring a lawyer is a great idea.

In an “open adoption”, the adoptive parents and birth parents are in close connection during the entire gestation period, and the adoptive parents agree to keep contact with the birth parents after the adoption and during the child’s development, with photos, letters and actual visits.

To facilitate an independent adoption, an “identified” adoption involves an agreement directly between birth and adoptive parents, that they then take to an adoption agency to facilitate the rest of the arrangement.  This is like a hybrid adoption of independent and agency adoption.

Lastly there’s international adoption, which has received a lot of attention lately.   This is when a parent adopts a child of a foreign country, and has to meet the requirements of both the US and the child’s home country.  This is a tricky process and requires an immigrant visa for the child and a challenging travel process, but once the child is in the country they are granted automatic citizenship.

There are lots of options out there, and the honest truth is that none of them are easy.  Perhaps the simplest is an agency adoption, with a certified team to facilitate the entire process, but this gives you very little control.  Often you’re put on lengthy waiting lists, and have to jump a number of hurdles.

An independent adoption is the most direct, allowing you to even possibly be a part of the gestation and birthing process; however, matching yourself with the right birthing parents is very time-consuming, and a difficult dynamic to work through.
